Workplace accident involving sulfuric acid sends 1 to hospital

Employers must provide adequate protection for employees who work at facilities at which they are exposed to hazardous chemicals. Toxic chemicals typically pose various health risks, including the danger of burn injuries if it makes contact with the skin. One such a dangerous substance is sulfuric acid, which was the subject of a recent workplace accident in California.

Two employees of a solar energy project at a power station near Blythe recently suffered burns when they were exposed to sulfuric acid. Fire crews of the county rushed to the scene of a 10-gallon spill of this dangerous, highly corrosive chemical. One employee's injuries were minor, but the second one was transported to a medical facility by helicopter for treatment of more serious burn injuries.

The circumstances that led to the spill at this plant are being investigated. Exposure to sulfuric acid can have severe consequences. Skin or eye contact can cause redness, blisters and serious burns, while ingestion can cause severe abdominal pain and internal burning, which might cause shock and collapse.

Serious burn injuries can have long-term consequences that typically involve ongoing care -- especially if skin grafts are required. This could bring about substantial medical expenses and lead to time off work. Fortunately, these costs are recoverable through the California workers' compensation insurance system. Any victim of a workplace accident is entitled to secure the support and guidance of an experienced workers' comp attorney to navigate the benefits claim on his or her behalf. Those who suffered injuries that caused disabilities might receive additional benefits.
