Construction worker suffers fractured leg in workplace accident

When California workers suffer workplace injuries that prevent them from returning to work for some time, the financial implications can be severe. An incident that caused such injuries to a construction worker in Berkeley is the subject of an investigation by the California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It occurred on a recent Tuesday morning.

Reportedly, firefighters rushed to a commercial and residential building site after learning of a workplace injury at approximately 9.30 a.m. The worker was part of a crew working on the construction of an eight-story building. Initial reports received by Cal/OSHA indicate that a steel beam that was being hoisted struck the worker's leg, causing a fracture.

Construction company owners are responsible for the safety and health of employees. Part of this responsibility is safety training and teaching workers how to stay safe when navigating areas around construction equipment, such as cranes and aerial lifts that move large objects. Such knowledge might have kept this worker at a safe distance from the hoisted steel beam.

When a construction worker suffers an injury such as a fractured leg, he or she will be off work for weeks -- or even months. Along with the medical expenses, the lost income can ruin one's finances. Fortunately, the California workers' compensation insurance system provides relief in the form of benefits that cover these losses. Although it will not include the full amount of lost wages, the benefits usually consist of two-thirds of the insured worker's gross weekly wage. Along with coverage of medical bills and transport costs to and from doctors and hospitals, the benefits may provide financial relief.
