Rebar impales California construction worker

Construction sites pose many known safety hazards from which employers must protect their employees. However, there are also those dangers that nobody can anticipate. The quick reactions of emergency workers might have saved the life of a California construction worker when rebar recently pierced through his body.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department says its Quick Response Unit rushed to a construction site after receiving an alert about a work accident shortly after 3 p.m. on a recent Tuesday. Upon arrival, paramedics found a worker impaled by two rebar rods, each with a diameter of one inch. A falling panel apparently struck the 27-year-old worker at the construction site of a multi-story building in Los Angeles.

LAFD responders used a rotary saw that was on site to cut away the panel, leaving only the pieces of rebar that pierced his torso. They attached one of their litter baskets to an onsite crane. After lifting the injured worker into the basket, the crane operator lowered him to ground level before transferring him to a waiting ambulance. A medical center admitted the worker in critical condition.

The severity of this construction worker's injuries will likely keep him off work for a significant length of time, and he will face mountains of medical bills. Fortunately, the California workers' compensation insurance system provides financial relief to victims of on-the-job accidents. Injured workers may file benefits claims for coverage of medical expenses. Benefits typically also include a wage-replacement package that is based on the basic weekly wage of the victim.
