Construction accident: Worker falls 7 stories to his death

Addressing fall hazards on construction sites is vital. Too many workers in California and other states lose their lives because fall protection is not in place. Reportedly, falls are one of the most frequently cited causes of deaths in the construction industry. Disregarding safety regulations often leads to fatalities, such as the death of a man in a recent construction accident in Santa Clara County.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety reported that a 34-year-old construction worker fell to his death at a local construction site. Details of the incident are limited, but emergency workers apparently responded to a call shortly before 8 a.m. on a recent Tuesday. Rescue crews arrived to find the body of a man who had fallen seven stories to his death.

The deceased man was an employee of a subcontractor based in Benicia. It is not known whether the victim wore a safety harness at the time of the fatal fall. The construction company will work with the California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine whether personal protective equipment was provided, along with training in the proper use of equipment to arrest falls.

Although this man's death in a construction accident may devastate his loved ones, they will be able to ease the resulting financial burden. The costs related to the end-of-life arrangements along with the unanticipated loss of income are typically included in the death benefits that they may claim. They may personally file death benefits claims with the workers' compensation insurance program, or they can utilize the services of an experienced workers' comp attorney who will pursue the claim for them.
