Work accident kills 25-year-old logger in Bear Valley Springs

The life of a 25-year-old California father of a 1-year-old child and another baby soon to be born lost his life on a recent Wednesday morning. Authorities reported that the man was part of a logging crew contracted to So Cal Edison. The loggers were removing dead trees in Bear Valley Springs when the work accident occurred.

The police chief and the fire department spokesperson said witnesses reported that the man was removing limbs from a tree that had already been felled. Due probably to the uneven surface and the sharp incline, the heavy tree moved unexpectedly and pinned the young father against a boulder. Being crushed against the rock was likely the cause of his death.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has reportedly been informed, and the agency will likely launch an investigation. OSHA inspectors will focus on the safety compliance of both So Cal Edison and the tree service contractor that employed the deceased worker. Safety violations, if any, will result in citations and possible fines that would hopefully encourage employers to prioritize worker safety in the future.

For the surviving family members of the man who died in this work accident, improved safety protocols at these California companies will have no benefits. They will have to cope with unanticipated end-of-life expenses and the sudden loss of income. Help is available through the workers' compensation insurance system with whom death benefits claims may be filed. Along with coverage of funeral and burial costs, a financial package should be provided to make up for a percentage of lost wages.
