Industrial accidents: Worker dies when heavy load falls on him

To protect California workers in industrial facilities, the owners of manufacturing businesses must comply with federal safety regulations. There are numerous types of safety hazards in factories, each requiring a unique set of precautions. If company owners fail to prioritize workers' safety, industrial accidents causing severe injuries -- or fatalities -- can occur.

One such accident claimed the life of a Sacramento man earlier this month. An incident report indicates that the 43-year-old worker was an employee of a steel manufacturing concern. At approximately 2 p.m. on a Saturday, police officers rushed to the factory where they found the deceased worker.

It was determined that the man was struck by a heavy load that had shifted before falling on him. The California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has reportedly taken over the investigation from the Sacramento Police Department. Investigators will determine whether the worker's death resulted from safety violations. If such violations are identified, the business owner will be penalized, and fines will be proposed. Although this may encourage compliance with safety regulations that will benefit other workers in the future, it will have no benefit for the loved ones of the deceased worker.

Following fatal industrial accidents, the surviving family members of workers who lost their lives may pursue financial assistance through the California workers' compensation system. The costs of end-of-life arrangements are typically covered by death benefits through the insurance program. Also, a portion of lost wages may be awarded as a financial package for a specified time following the tragic death.
