Fatal construction accident: Crane crushes worker against trailer

Construction workers nationwide, including here in California, are exposed to multiple hazards that are present in all areas of construction sites. While operators of construction equipment must be qualified to safely operate the large machines, workers who move about at ground level must be aware of the dangers posed by the equipment. It is not uncommon for a fatal construction accident to involve a piece of equipment and a worker on the ground.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported a fatality that occurred near an intersection in West Hollywood on a recent Tuesday afternoon. The incident reportedly happened at a site at which construction activities were in progress. Although further investigation is required to determine the circumstances that led to the worker's death, it was reported that the victim was trapped between a crane and another vehicle that is believed to have been a trailer.

The victim suffered crushing injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but he or she succumbed to the severe injuries later. Representatives from the California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration arrived at the construction site and launched an investigation. Investigators will determine whether this worker's death resulted from noncompliance with safety regulations.

While no amount of money can replace a loved one, the death benefits that may be pursued through the California workers' compensation insurance system may ease the financial burden that commonly follows an unexpected death from an on-the-job accident. Following this fatal construction accident, the surviving family members may file a death benefits claim with the insurance program, and they will likely receive compensation for the funeral and burial. Also, benefits typically include a portion of the decedent's lost income to help with day-to-day living expenses.
