Bar tenders may not all be covered by workers' compensation

Every industry has its own safety hazards, and this includes the hospitality industry. Bartending is one of the occupations in which serious work-related injuries are prevalent. Unfortunately, many California workers in this industry may go uncovered by workers' compensation insurance.

Injuries often associated with the construction industry are reported to be quite common among workers who spend long shifts behind bar counters. These include elbows affected by tendonitis, painful wrists due to carpal tunnel syndrome, lumbar spine injuries and plantar fasciitis in their heels. Burn injuries and cuts are also regular occurrences.

Bartenders are typically exposed to many more dangers than office workers. Along with the repetitive motions of mixing and pouring drinks, they are typically exposed to breaking glass, flames and intoxicated, unruly and sometimes aggressive customers. It is reported that only a small percentage of workers in this industry is covered by insurance provided by their employers. For this reason, many injuries suffered by bartenders go untreated.

All employers in California must provide workers' compensation insurance for their employees, and injured workers should not be left to deal with painful injuries without treatment. Ongoing medical treatment may be required for some of these injuries, and medical bills may be overwhelming. In some cases, employees may have difficulty in proving that a condition is work-related, and the support and guidance of an experienced workers' compensation attorney may help to pursue benefits claims. Benefits typically cover all injury-related medical expenses along with a percentage of lost wages if the worker has to be absent from work.
