Construction roller causes serious workplace injury

Road construction workers everywhere are exposed to multiple safety hazards, from accidents caused by negligent motorists to injuries caused by construction equipment. A recent incident in San Francisco that caused a serious workplace injury will be investigated by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health along with the San Francisco Police. The incident reportedly took place shortly after noon on a recent Thursday.

A spokesman for the fire department says emergency workers arrived at the site of a city road project in the Parkside neighborhood to find an injured worker lying on the ground. A police report indicates that the man, who was the employee of a construction contractor, was knocked down and run over by a heavy construction roller. He was rushed to the hospital from where it was reported that he was conscious and able to communicate with paramedics.

No further information was available about the condition of the 50-year-old worker. Cal/OSHA reported that its records showed no previous investigations at this contractor's work sites. Nevertheless, investigators will determine whether safety violations caused this man's injuries.

The circumstances and severity of each workplace injury suffered on a construction site are different, and the consequences of such injuries vary as well. Unexpected time away from work and high medical expenses can adversely impact the financial stability of an injured worker. Fortunately, financial relief may be pursued through the California workers' compensation insurance system. Not only will the injured worker be compensated for medical expenses but, in most cases, also for lost wages. This benefit is based on the most recent wage level of the injured worker.
