What workers’ compensation benefits are available at the federal level?

Like the rest of us, federal workers too can become injured on the job from time to time and need compensation to pay for medical bills, lost wages and other costs. Federal employees, though, fall under a different workers’ compensation system than those in the private sector. Here we’d like to briefly look at this system and the types of benefits it offers.

First of all, workers’ compensation benefits for injured federal employees are administered by the Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs, which oversees four major different disability compensation programs. These disability programs include benefits for wage replacement, medical treatment vocational rehabilitation and other benefits.

In addition to these benefits, there are several other programs which offer workers’ compensation benefits for specific groups. The most general of these is the Federal Employees’ Compensation Program, which offers benefits for employment-related injuries and occupational diseases for those employed by the federal government and federal agencies. Another program at the federal level is the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program, which provides benefits to current or former employees or survivors of the Department of Energy and certain vendors and contractors. To be eligible for benefits, employees must have been exposed to certain forms of dangerous radiation.

Two other programs which offer compensation to certain federal employees are the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Program and the Black Lung Benefits Program. The former is targeted at maritime employees and the latter is aimed at coal mine workers.

In our next post, we’ll continue this discussion by speaking about the importance of working with an experienced workers’ compensation attorney to receive the benefits to which one is entitled through the federal government.
